There are four types of Dengue viruses that cause Dengue fever worldwide, all of them transmitted by a type of mosquito called Aedes mosquito. The characteristic Dengue fever symptoms are sudden-onset fever, headache (typically located behind the eyes), muscle and joint pains, and rash. The alternative name for Dengue, “break-bone fever”, comes from the associated muscle and joint pains. There is no specific treatment for Dengue fever and most people recover within 2 weeks. Fluid intake is strongly recommended to prevent dehydration while the patient is febrile. Control fever with acetaminophen. Aspirin, aspirin-containing drugs, and other no steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) should be avoided because of their anticoagulant properties. Most Dengue infections result in relatively mild illness, but some can progress to the deadly Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Hemorrhage, decrease in blood pressure and declining platelet count are all warning signs that DHF may be developing. In such cases professional care is strongly recommended.
